How do I know my horse is fit to event?
Preparing your horse for his first event takes planning and preperation. Set up a training schedule to include at least one day of jumping and one gallop cross country with several days working on your flat work. Remember, the basics of your flat work transfer to jumping both cross country and stadium. You should schedule at least 4 weeks of training before your event. The level of fitness will be determined by the level you are competing. Keep in mind that while you are training your horse for optimum fitness, you need to work on yourself as well. The rider should be strong and limber with plenty of stamina. This may require you to add some cross training to your schedule as well. Yoga, pilates and stretching enhance the riders position and balance which will benefit your riding tremendously.
